Selection Criteria

3.1 Commitment to ethical conduct and the highest standards of professional accountability

My experience in construction has shown me that professional accountability is essential because decisions and information can directly affect safety, quality, cost and project outcomes.

While working in construction-related roles, I have been responsible for following procedures, checking information carefully and ensuring that tasks are completed safely and accurately. In traffic control, for example, I was required to apply safety procedures, identify hazards and respond appropriately to changing site conditions.

This experience reinforced the importance of acting responsibly, following established requirements and raising concerns when something appears unclear or unsafe. I understand that professional integrity means taking ownership of my work, acknowledging limitations and seeking guidance when necessary rather than making assumptions.

As an emerging engineer, I aim to maintain high professional standards by being accurate, reliable, transparent and accountable in the work I complete.

3.2 Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with other engineers and stakeholders from different fields

Effective communication is an important part of engineering because projects involve people with different technical backgrounds and priorities.

Through my construction experience, I have communicated with project managers, designers, consultants, contractors and other team members regarding project information, outstanding actions and coordination requirements.

I have learned to adapt the way I communicate depending on the audience. When discussing technical matters, I focus on being accurate and specific, while with non-technical stakeholders I aim to explain information clearly and simply.

My previous experience in coaching and retail also strengthened my ability to communicate with different personalities and age groups.

These experiences have helped me become more confident in professional conversations and have shown me that clear communication is essential for reducing misunderstandings and keeping projects progressing effectively.

3.3 Ability to engage with a creative, innovative and proactive environment

Construction and engineering environments regularly involve changing information, competing priorities and unexpected problems, so being proactive is important.

In my professional experience, I have learned not to wait for issues to become larger before addressing them. When working with project documentation or assigned tasks, I review the available information, identify anything that appears unclear or inconsistent and raise it with the appropriate team member.

I also look for ways to complete tasks more efficiently and organise information more clearly.

My university engineering projects have further developed this skill by requiring me to compare different design options and consider technical performance, constructability, sustainability and cost.

These experiences have taught me that innovation is not always about creating something completely new. It can also involve improving a process, identifying a better solution or finding a more efficient way to approach a problem.

3.4 Demonstrated ability to use and manage information

Engineering and construction projects involve large amounts of information, including drawings, specifications, schedules, reports, registers and correspondence.

Through my professional experience, I have worked with project documentation including schedules, design information, registers, transmittals, risk documentation and quality information.

I understand the importance of ensuring that information is current, accurate and properly organised before it is used or distributed.

When working with project documentation, I check relevant details, use the latest available information and seek clarification when something appears inconsistent.

My university studies have also strengthened my ability to research, analyse and present technical information using tools such as Excel, MS Project and engineering software.

These experiences have developed my ability to manage information in a structured and responsible way, which is essential in engineering environments where inaccurate information can affect project outcomes.

3.5 Ability to manage my own performance in a professional environment

Balancing university studies with professional work has required strong organisation, time management and personal accountability.

In my current professional environment, I am responsible for completing assigned tasks while managing changing priorities and deadlines.

I organise my workload by identifying urgent tasks, planning ahead and keeping track of outstanding actions. If I am unsure about a task, I first review the available information and then ask for clarification when necessary.

I also value feedback and use it to improve the quality of my work. One area I have particularly focused on is becoming more confident and proactive in professional environments.

Over time, I have become more comfortable asking questions, contributing to discussions and taking greater ownership of tasks.

This experience has taught me that managing my own performance involves being organised, dependable, open to feedback and willing to continually improve.

3.6 Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and show leadership when required

Teamwork has been an important part of both my professional and academic experience.

Construction projects require many different disciplines to work together, and I have contributed to teams involving project managers, consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders.

I support my team by completing assigned tasks, communicating progress, sharing information and helping where required.

My previous experience as a football coach also developed my leadership skills. In that role, I was responsible for organising training activities, communicating with players and adapting plans depending on the situation.

I have also gained leadership experience in retail, where I supported task delegation and team coordination when senior management was unavailable.

These experiences have shown me that leadership is not always about holding a formal title. It can involve taking responsibility, helping others, making decisions and ensuring that the team continues working toward a shared goal.

As I develop professionally, I aim to continue strengthening both my teamwork and leadership capabilities.
